The main types of upsell and cross-sell apps
- Product page and cart recommendations: related, frequently bought together and "you may also like" blocks.
- Cart drawer and cart upsells: offers and add-ons shown as the customer reviews the cart, often with free-shipping progress bars.
- Post-purchase offers: one-click offers shown after payment, which cannot interrupt the original sale.
- Checkout upsells: offers within checkout, with options that depend on your plan and Shopify's checkout rules.
- Bundles and volume discounts: offers that group products or reward buying more.
- Subscription and add-on offers: attaching a recurring product or accessory to the main purchase.
Most stores need one or two of these, not all of them. See the strategy in our upsell and cross-sell guide.
The criteria that matter
- Relevance: can you control which offers show for which products, or does it only guess? Poor recommendations hurt more than none.
- Placement: does it support the places you want (product page, cart, post-purchase) in a way that fits your theme?
- Speed: how much script and style does it add, and does it load on every page? Test before and after. See how apps slow a store.
- Compatibility: does it work with your theme, your checkout, your discounts, your bundles and your subscriptions?
- Reporting: does it show revenue it influenced, and does that match your own analytics?
- Control: can your team change offers and design without a developer?
- Cost model: monthly fee, fee tied to revenue or orders, or both, and how that scales as you grow.
- Cleanliness: does it use theme app extensions and leave no code behind if removed?
- Support and maintenance: how quickly are problems fixed, and is the app actively updated?
How to score your shortlist
- Pick the two or three types you actually need.
- Shortlist two or three apps for each, using reviews and the criteria above as a filter.
- Install each on a duplicate theme or a development store, and record speed scores before and after.
- Set up the same offer in each and compare how easy it was.
- Check how it behaves with your discounts, bundles and shipping rules.
- Run the best one live as a test, not as a permanent change, before you commit.
When to build instead of buy
Apps are fastest to start with. They can become the wrong choice when you stack several overlapping apps, when the fees grow faster than the revenue they create, or when you need logic an app cannot do. In those cases a custom solution can be leaner, built into the theme or using checkout extensions and Shopify Functions. See our upsell funnels, bundle funnels and custom app development work.
Measure the real impact
- Track average order value, conversion rate and revenue per visitor together, not only attach rate.
- Compare with a control group or a proper A/B test. See our A/B testing guide.
- Watch page speed and checkout completion after installing.
- Review monthly, and remove any app that does not clearly earn its cost.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best upsell app for Shopify?
- It depends on where you want offers, your theme, your checkout and your budget. Compare by type and criteria, test on a duplicate theme, and measure the effect on revenue per visitor.
- Do upsell apps slow down Shopify stores?
- Some do, by adding scripts and styles. Test page speed before and after installing, and prefer apps that load only where needed.
- Are post-purchase upsells better than cart upsells?
- Post-purchase offers cannot interrupt the original sale, so they carry less risk. Cart and product-page offers can lift more but can also distract, so test both.
