Shopify SEO Tips That Still Work: What to Prioritise in 2026

SEO tips age quickly, and a lot of them are recycled advice that never mattered. These are the ones we keep seeing move results on Shopify stores, roughly ordered by how much return they give for the effort.

1. Put collection pages first

Collection pages usually match the searches that have buying intent, such as "women's running shoes" or "cast iron cookware". They also tend to have more search demand than individual products.

  • Give each collection a keyword-led title and a short, useful introduction above the products.
  • Add supporting content (buying advice, sizing, FAQs) below the product grid if it helps shoppers decide.
  • Create collections for the groupings people actually search for, not only the ones that mirror your internal categories.

2. Write product content for shoppers, not for robots

Thin, duplicated manufacturer copy gives search engines no reason to rank you above every other store selling the same item. Original descriptions that answer real questions (materials, fit, use cases, delivery, returns) do.

There is a full walkthrough in our Shopify product page SEO guide.

4. Keep the store fast

Speed affects both rankings and conversion. The usual culprits are oversized images, too many apps and heavy theme JavaScript. Remove what you do not use, and measure again after every change. Our work on Core Web Vitals goes deeper.

5. Clean up duplicate and thin pages

Variant, filter and tag URLs can multiply your page count without adding value. Make sure the right canonical tags are in place and decide which parameters should be crawled at all. Details are in our guide to canonicals and duplicate content.

6. Add structured data and optimise images

Product, breadcrumb and FAQ markup help search engines understand your pages and can earn rich results. Descriptive file names and alt text help your products show up in image search. See schema markup and image SEO.

7. Measure revenue, not just rankings

A page that ranks first for a keyword nobody buys with is not a win. Track organic sessions, conversion rate and revenue by landing page, and put effort where organic traffic actually converts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important Shopify SEO tip?
Optimise your collection pages first. They usually target the highest-intent searches and often have more search demand than individual product pages.
Do I need an SEO app for Shopify?
Not necessarily. You can do the core work with Shopify's built-in fields. Apps can save time on bulk edits, redirects or structured data, but they do not replace good content and structure. See our guide to choosing one.
Is blogging worth it for Shopify SEO?
Yes if the posts answer questions your customers actually search for and link to relevant collections and products. Blog posts written only to hit a publishing schedule rarely help.
