Does Switching Shopify Themes Hurt SEO? What to Check Before You Publish

A question that comes up constantly in the Shopify community: will a new theme damage my rankings? The short answer is that URLs live with the platform, not the theme, so a theme change does not itself change them. But the theme controls a lot of on-page SEO, so it can still help or hurt.

What stays the same

Product, collection, page and blog URLs are set by Shopify and your handles, not by the theme. Your content, redirects and sitemap also stay put. That is why switching themes is far lower risk than switching platforms.

What can change

  • Title tag and meta description output. Some themes append the store name differently or override defaults.
  • Heading structure. A theme might use the wrong heading level, or output two H1s on a page.
  • Canonical tags and hreflang, if the theme customises them.
  • Structured data. Themes differ widely in the markup they produce for products, breadcrumbs and reviews.
  • Page speed and Core Web Vitals, which depend heavily on theme code.
  • Internal linking, such as breadcrumbs, related products and navigation structure.
  • Image handling: lazy loading, sizing and alt text output.

Pre-publish checklist

  1. Preview the new theme and compare the page source of key pages against the live theme: title, meta description, canonical, headings and JSON-LD.
  2. Run key templates (home, collection, product, blog, article) through PageSpeed Insights and compare mobile results.
  3. Test the Rich Results Test on a product page and confirm the markup is at least as complete as before.
  4. Check that navigation and internal links still expose your important collections.
  5. Confirm any custom code, tracking scripts and app blocks have been carried across.
  6. Publish at a quiet time and re-check Search Console coverage and Core Web Vitals over the following weeks.

If the change is bigger than a re-skin, see our theme migration approach.

Choosing a theme that helps SEO

Look for clean semantic markup, minimal JavaScript, good structured data and strong Core Web Vitals on a real demo store. A performance-first theme build makes those the default rather than an afterthought.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing my Shopify theme change my URLs?
No. URLs are determined by the platform and your handles, not by the theme, so a theme switch does not change them by itself.
Can a new theme make my Shopify site slower?
Yes. Themes vary a lot in the CSS and JavaScript they load. Test key templates in PageSpeed Insights before you publish and compare with the current theme.
Do I need redirects when I change my Shopify theme?
Not for the theme change itself, since URLs stay the same. You only need redirects if you also change handles or restructure collections at the same time.
