What Product schema does
Schema markup is a block of structured data, usually JSON-LD, that describes the page in a format search engines read directly. For a product page it can describe the name, images, description, brand, SKU, price, currency, availability and review ratings.
Correct markup can make a listing eligible for enhanced results such as price, availability and star ratings. It does not guarantee them, and it is not a direct ranking factor, so treat it as a way to help search engines understand and present your pages.
What your theme probably already does
Most current Shopify themes output Product markup. Themes can use Shopify's structured data filter in Liquid to build it from the product data, but the completeness varies a lot. Check yours before adding anything.
The fields that matter
- name, description and image, matching what visitors see on the page.
- brand and sku (and a GTIN or MPN if you have them).
- offers with price, priceCurrency, availability and a URL that matches the product page.
- aggregateRating and review, only if your page shows genuine customer reviews.
- Correct handling of variants, so the price and availability shown in markup match the default variant users see.
Markup must reflect what is actually on the page. Marking up content that users cannot see can lead to the structured data being ignored or to manual action.
Reviews and ratings
Star ratings in results come from review markup. Only mark up real reviews collected from real customers, displayed on the page, and follow Google's guidelines on self-serving and third-party review widgets. Many review apps output their own markup, so check what yours generates.
Avoid duplicate and conflicting markup
A common problem is a theme, a review app and an SEO app each outputting their own Product schema. Conflicting or duplicated markup can cause errors or unpredictable results.
- View the page source and search for application/ld+json to count the Product blocks.
- If there are several, decide which one is the source of truth.
- Turn off the markup in the others, either in the app settings or in the theme.
Test and monitor
- Run key product pages through Google's Rich Results Test and fix errors first, then warnings.
- Use the Schema Markup Validator for a general syntax check.
- Watch the enhancement reports in Search Console for product-related issues after you make changes.
- Re-test after theme updates and after installing or removing apps.
