Where duplicate URLs come from
- Products reachable through a collection path (/collections/shoes/products/runner) as well as the main path (/products/runner).
- Variant URLs with a ?variant= parameter.
- Collection tag and filter URLs, and sorted or paginated views.
- Theme or app-generated parameters, and tracking parameters added by campaigns.
How canonical tags handle it
A canonical tag in the page head declares the preferred URL for that content. Shopify's default themes output a canonical for products, collections and pages that points to the main version, so the collection-path and variant URLs consolidate onto the main product URL.
A canonical is a hint, not a command. Search engines can still choose a different URL if other signals point elsewhere, so keep your internal links, sitemap and canonicals consistent.
How to check your own store
- View source on a product, a collection, a filtered collection and a paginated page. Search for rel="canonical" and confirm each points where you expect.
- In Search Console, look at Pages for "Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user" and investigate those groups.
- Crawl the site and look for large numbers of parameterised URLs being linked internally.
- Confirm your internal links point to the canonical URL, especially in the navigation, collections and blog posts.
Fixing common problems
- If your theme links products through collection paths, change the links to the main product URL so internal signals match the canonical. Our step-by-step fix shows how.
- If filtered or tag pages are thin and numerous, decide which ones deserve to be indexed and prevent the rest from being crawled or linked.
- If the theme has removed or altered canonical tags, restore the correct output in the theme code.
- Avoid publishing near-identical products instead of using variants.
A technical SEO audit will map exactly which of these apply to your store.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Shopify have duplicate content problems?
- It can expose the same product at several URLs, such as collection paths and variant parameters. Shopify's canonical tags normally consolidate them, but you should verify this on your own theme.
- What is a canonical tag on Shopify?
- A canonical tag is an element in the page head that tells search engines which URL is the preferred version of a page, so duplicate URLs pass their signals to it.
- Can I edit canonical tags in Shopify?
- Yes, by editing the theme code where the canonical link is output. Change this carefully, because incorrect canonicals can remove pages from search results.
