Shopify SEO Checklist: 25 Things to Fix Before You Chase Traffic

Most Shopify SEO advice is a pile of tips with no order. This checklist puts the work in the sequence we use on client stores: make the site crawlable first, fix the pages that earn revenue next, then build content on top of a sound base.

1. Technical foundation

Search engines have to be able to find, crawl and index your pages before anything else matters. Shopify handles a lot of this by default, but not all of it.

  1. Connect Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, then submit /sitemap.xml. Shopify generates the sitemap for you.
  2. Check the Pages report in Search Console for pages that are excluded or errored, and work out why for each group.
  3. Confirm one domain version is primary (with or without www) and that the other redirects to it.
  4. Review robots.txt (editable through the robots.txt.liquid template) and make sure nothing important is blocked.
  5. Make sure no leftover noindex tags remain from development, and that password protection is off on a live store.
  6. Test your key templates in PageSpeed Insights and note the Core Web Vitals results for mobile.

If you want an expert pass over this layer, that is exactly what a technical SEO audit covers.

2. Site structure and URLs

  1. Keep the hierarchy shallow: homepage → collections → products, so important pages are within three clicks of the homepage.
  2. Use clean, short handles for products, collections and pages, and avoid changing them later without a redirect.
  3. Link to collections from your main navigation and to your best sellers from those collections.
  4. Add breadcrumbs so both users and search engines can see where a page sits.
  5. Check that filtered, sorted and tag URLs do not create thousands of near-duplicate pages. See our guide to Shopify canonicals and duplicate content.

3. On-page SEO for your money pages

Start with the pages that earn revenue: your top collections and products. Shopify lets you edit the page title and meta description under "Search engine listing" on each one.

  1. Give every important page a unique title tag that leads with the main keyword and stays readable.
  2. Write meta descriptions that describe the page and give a reason to click. They do not affect rankings directly but they affect clicks.
  3. Use one H1 per page (most themes make the page title the H1) and a logical H2/H3 structure below it.
  4. Write original product and collection copy instead of pasting the manufacturer's description. See how to optimise collection pages.
  5. Add descriptive alt text to product and collection images.
  6. Link related products, collections and guides to each other with descriptive anchor text.

The detail behind each of these is in our on-page SEO and product page SEO resources.

4. Structured data

  1. Confirm your theme outputs Product markup with price, availability and reviews where you have them.
  2. Add Organization and WebSite markup sitewide, and BreadcrumbList on deeper pages.
  3. Add FAQPage markup only where a real FAQ is visible on the page.
  4. Validate with Google's Rich Results Test and fix warnings, not just errors.

See Shopify schema markup for what to implement, and our product schema and rich snippets guide for the details.

5. Content and keyword targeting

  1. Research what shoppers search for before you name collections and write copy. Our keyword research process starts from real search demand.
  2. Map one primary keyword to each page so your own pages do not compete with each other.
  3. Publish helpful guides that answer pre-purchase questions and link them to the relevant collections and products.
  4. Refresh older content when it goes out of date rather than letting it decay.

6. Performance and monitoring

  1. Compress and correctly size images, and lazy-load anything below the fold.
  2. Audit installed apps and remove the ones you no longer use. Leftover app code often stays behind.
  3. Set a monthly check on Search Console clicks, impressions, top queries and indexing issues.
  4. Track organic revenue, not only traffic, in your analytics.

Ongoing tracking is what SEO reporting is for: it shows which changes worked.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first for Shopify SEO?
Get the technical basics right first: connect Search Console, submit the sitemap, and fix indexing and speed problems. Then optimise your top collections and products, then build content on top.
Does Shopify handle SEO automatically?
Shopify handles the sitemap, canonical tags on product URLs, SSL and clean HTML output. It does not write your titles, descriptions or copy, fix thin content, or choose your site structure. Those are still your job.
How long does Shopify SEO take to work?
It depends on competition and the state of the site, but plan in months, not weeks. Technical fixes can show up quickly in indexing, while ranking gains from content and links build over time.
