What they are
A customer account UI extension is a small piece of app code that Shopify renders inside the new customer accounts. It looks native to the account, uses Shopify's components, and can read and write customer data through Shopify's Customer Account API.
They work with Shopify's new customer accounts, not the older classic accounts. Check your store's account type and plan before you plan a build, since availability can vary.
Where they appear
- Full pages: your own page in the account, with its own link in the account navigation, such as a pets page, a wishlist or a rewards page.
- Profile blocks: content added to the customer's profile page.
- Order blocks: content on the order list and order status pages, such as an offer, a tracking helper or a cross-sell.
- Configurable blocks: banners and text blocks whose content the store team edits in the admin, without a developer.

Extension or full custom app?
Many account features need only the extension. You add a backend when you must do things the extension cannot do on its own, such as uploading files, calling private systems or running admin-level actions. Plan for both the front end and any back end early.

- Pick the one job the account page should do for your customers.
- List the data you need, and where it will live: customer fields, metafields or an outside system.
- Decide what your team will edit without a developer, and expose those as settings.
