Shopify Image SEO: Alt Text, File Naming and Compression Done Properly

Images do three jobs for SEO: they help search engines understand a page, they can bring traffic from image search and Google Lens, and they decide how fast the page loads. Most stores get all three wrong in the same way: camera file names, empty alt text and uncompressed originals.

Why image SEO matters for ecommerce

  • Product searches often return image results, and shoppers click through from them.
  • Alt text helps search engines understand what an image shows, and it is the text screen readers read aloud.
  • Image weight affects Largest Contentful Paint and Core Web Vitals.
  • Images are part of the page content, so original photos help a product stand out from copy-paste listings.

Alt text that helps

Alt text should describe what the image shows, briefly and specifically, as if explaining it to someone who cannot see it.

  • Good: "Navy wool crew-neck jumper laid flat, front view".
  • Weak: "jumper".
  • Bad: "jumper wool jumper mens jumper buy jumper online cheap". Keyword stuffing does not help and can look spammy.
  • Include the product name and a distinguishing detail such as colour or angle where relevant.
  • Write alt text for each variant image, so a colour change is described correctly.
  • Leave alt empty for purely decorative images so screen readers skip them.
  • Do not start with "image of" or "picture of". Screen readers already say it is an image.

Alt text also supports accessibility. See our accessibility guide.

File naming before upload

File names give search engines a small extra clue, and descriptive names are easier to manage. Rename files before uploading, using lowercase words separated by hyphens.

  • Good: navy-wool-crew-neck-jumper-front.jpg.
  • Poor: IMG_4821.JPG or final_v3_new.jpg.
  • Keep names short and relevant, and avoid special characters and spaces.

Shopify does not let you rename a file after it has been uploaded, so getting this right at the start saves re-uploading later.

Compression and formats

  • Export at the size you need, not the size your camera produced. A common mistake is uploading images several times larger than they will ever be displayed.
  • Compress before uploading using a tool that keeps quality acceptable. Aim for the smallest file that still looks sharp.
  • Use JPEG for photographs and PNG where you need transparency or crisp graphics.
  • Shopify's image CDN resizes images on request and serves modern formats, such as WebP, to browsers that support them, so you do not need to convert files yourself.

Responsive sizes and loading

  • Make sure your theme uses Shopify's image filters with explicit widths and srcset, so phones download smaller files.
  • Set width and height attributes so the layout does not shift as images load.
  • Lazy-load images below the fold, but not the main image at the top of the page. Give that one high priority.

The speed side is covered in our image optimisation guide.

Fixing a whole catalogue

  1. Export your products as a CSV. It includes an image alt text column.
  2. Write alt text using a pattern based on product title, colour and view, then add detail for your top sellers by hand.
  3. Import the file back, and spot-check results on the live pages.
  4. For blog and collection images, update alt text in the editor or theme.
  5. Re-upload badly named or oversized images for your highest-traffic pages first.

Start with the products that earn the most traffic and revenue. Our image SEO service handles catalogue-wide fixes.

  5. Width and height set, with lazy loading below the fold only.
  6. Real image elements in the HTML, near relevant text.
  7. Image URLs in structured data.
  8. Regular review of your largest images.
