Klaviyo Browse Abandonment Flow for Shopify: Setup and Best Practices

Browse abandonment emails reach people who looked at products but did not add anything to their cart. Intent is weaker than at checkout, so the tone should be lighter and the volume lower. Here is how to set it up.

1. Make sure tracking works

This flow depends on Klaviyo's onsite tracking recording product views and connecting them to a known email address. That means the visitor must already be identified, for example a subscriber who clicked through from an email or a returning customer. Check that onsite tracking is installed and that Viewed Product events are arriving.

2. Trigger and filters

  • Trigger on the viewed product event.
  • Exclude people who have since added to cart or started checkout, since the cart flow should handle them.
  • Exclude recent purchasers of that product.
  • Limit how often someone can re-enter, so they are not emailed after every visit.

3. Timing and content

  • Send the first email after a few hours, not minutes.
  • Show the product they viewed, with a clear link back to it.
  • Add a few related products or a piece of social proof.
  • One or two emails is usually enough.

4. Mistakes to avoid

  • Sending too soon or too often, which feels intrusive.
  • Offering discounts by default, which can teach browsers to wait for one.
  • Overlapping with the cart flow so people get several emails at once.

5. Measure it

Track placed-order revenue, click rate and unsubscribes. Compare against a holdout if you can. Set it up alongside a welcome series and an abandoned cart flow. Our browse abandonment service builds and tests it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a browse abandonment email?
An automated email to someone who viewed products but did not add them to their cart, prompting them to come back.
Why is my Klaviyo browse abandonment flow not sending?

How is browse abandonment different from abandoned cart?
Browse abandonment targets people who only viewed products. Abandoned cart targets people who added items or started checkout, who have stronger intent.
