1. Choose the trigger
Klaviyo's Shopify integration provides events you can trigger from. The common choices are Started Checkout, for people who reached checkout and entered their email, and Added to Cart, which needs onsite tracking and catches people earlier. Started Checkout is the usual starting point because it comes with an email address.
2. Plan the sequence
- Email 1: a simple reminder within a few hours, showing what they left behind and a clear button back to the cart.
- Email 2: address hesitation with delivery, returns, reviews or answers to common questions.
- Email 3: a final nudge the next day or so. Use an incentive only if it makes commercial sense for you.
- Adjust the timing and length to your buying cycle and margins.
3. Add filters so it stops when it should
- Exit the flow when the customer places an order.
- Use flow filters to exclude customers who have already purchased since entering the flow.
- Consider excluding recent buyers or people already in another flow.
- Respect consent and suppressions.
4. Write and design for the reader
- Show the actual products with images, prices and a link straight back to their cart.
- Keep the copy short, human and specific.
- Design for mobile first, since most emails are opened on phones.
- Make delivery, returns and support information easy to find.
5. Test before it goes live, then improve
- Trigger the flow with a test checkout and check every email, link and product block.
- Turn the flow live and watch placed-order revenue, click rate and unsubscribes.
- A/B test one variable at a time: subject line, timing or the incentive.
- Review results regularly rather than leaving it untouched.
This is our Klaviyo abandoned cart flow service. Pair it with a good welcome series for the full lifecycle.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I set up an abandoned cart flow in Klaviyo?
- Create a flow triggered by Started Checkout, add a short sequence of emails with timing between them, add filters so it stops after a purchase, and test it with a real checkout before switching it on.
- How many abandoned cart emails should I send?
- Many stores use two or three. The right number depends on your buying cycle, margins and how customers react, so test and adjust.
- Should I offer a discount in an abandoned cart email?
- Only if it makes commercial sense. Consider sending reminders and answers to objections first, and keep incentives for the later emails so you do not train customers to abandon carts.
