Migration

Magento to Shopify Migration

Magento gives you total control and charges you for it in licence fees, hosting and developers who are hard to hire and harder to replace. We move complex catalogues, multi-store setups and B2B pricing structures onto Shopify, and we tell you which Magento behaviours have no equivalent before you commit.

Why it matters

The Magento licence is rarely the biggest line on the invoice.

Adobe Commerce licensing is expensive, but the cost that actually drives replatforming is everything around it: dedicated hosting, a Magento-certified developer or agency, and a release process where a straightforward content change becomes a deployment. Magento 1 reached end of life in 2020 and still runs a surprising number of stores, unpatched and uninsurable. Magento 2 is a capable platform, and if you have the team to run it properly it may still be the right one. Our position is that Shopify wins on total cost of ownership for most mid-market merchants — but not all of them, and the gap is narrowest exactly where Magento is strongest.

Sound familiar?

Running Magento has quietly become a full-time engineering commitment.

Most of these are sound reasons to replatform. One is an assumption that causes real damage on enterprise migrations, and it is worth naming.

  • You are still on Magento 1, unpatched, and every security review flags it as an accepted risk.
  • A simple catalogue or content change requires a developer, a deployment window and a rollback plan.
  • Your Magento agency or in-house specialist is a single point of failure you cannot easily replace.
  • You assume a catalogue this complex cannot run on Shopify, so you have never properly costed it.
  • Licence, hosting, monitoring and retained development now exceed what the platform returns.
  • Custom modules written years ago block upgrades, and nobody left can safely refactor them.

What's included

What a Magento migration covers

Complex catalogue structures, multi-store logic and B2B rules — mapped deliberately, not dumped through a converter.

Attribute sets to metafields

Magento's EAV model lets every product type carry its own attribute set. Shopify has no direct equivalent, so we map attributes into metafield definitions, product taxonomy and variant options depending on how each one is actually used — filtered on, displayed, or merely stored. That distinction determines the structure, and we agree it with you before import.

Configurable and bundle products

Configurable, grouped, bundle and custom-option products all collapse into Shopify's simpler variant model. Some map cleanly. Bundles and dependent custom options usually need Shopify Functions, a product-options app, or a rethink of how the product is sold. We identify each affected product line during the audit.

Store views to Shopify Markets

Magento websites, stores and store views become Shopify Markets — with per-market domains or subfolders, currencies, pricing, language and catalogue availability. Where a store view carried genuinely different content rather than translation, we say so early, because that is where the mapping stops being one-to-one.

B2B accounts and tiered pricing

Customer groups, tier pricing, catalogue price rules and quote workflows map to Shopify B2B on Plus: company profiles, multiple locations, payment terms and price lists per company. We rebuild the pricing logic and test it against real accounts, because B2B customers notice a wrong price immediately.

Large catalogue bulk operations

Catalogues in the tens or hundreds of thousands of SKUs are moved through the Bulk Operations and GraphQL Admin APIs, not spreadsheets. That means rate limits, batching, resumable jobs and full reconciliation reports — imported versus expected, with the differences explained rather than rounded off.

Extension inventory and replacement

Every installed extension and every custom module is inventoried and assigned an outcome: native Shopify feature, app, custom build, or retire. Magento stores accumulate bespoke modules that nobody has documented, so this audit routinely uncovers logic your business depends on and nobody remembers commissioning.

How it runs

How a Magento migration actually runs.

Three to six weeks for straightforward catalogues. Large catalogues, multi-store setups or B2B pricing structures are eight to twelve — and Magento projects land in the second bracket more often than the first.

  1. 01

    Catalogue and module audit

We interrogate the Magento database directly: attribute sets, product types, store views, customer groups, price rules and every custom module. The output names exactly what maps cleanly and what does not.

  2. 02

    Model the Shopify structure

Metafield definitions, variant strategy, Markets configuration and B2B price lists are designed and documented before a single product is imported. Getting this wrong is the expensive mistake on Magento projects.

  3. 03

    Bulk import and rebuild

Catalogue moved through the Admin API in batches with reconciliation reports, theme built on Online Store 2.0, replacement apps configured, and B2B pricing tested against real company accounts.

  4. 04

    Redirect, cut over, monitor

Magento URL rewrites and layered navigation parameters are mapped to Shopify equivalents with 301s. After launch we watch crawl stats, 404 logs and rankings daily for thirty days.

Straight answer

Shopify is not always cheaper than Magento. It is usually simpler.

A good fit if…

  • Total cost of ownership, not licence cost alone, is what is driving the decision to move.
  • You want your team publishing changes without a deployment pipeline standing between them.
  • Your B2B requirements are company accounts, price lists and payment terms rather than bespoke workflow.
  • You are on Magento 1 and have been deferring the upgrade decision for years.

Probably not, if…

  • Your commerce logic is genuinely bespoke and lives in custom modules you cannot rewrite.
  • You need ERP-grade order orchestration or warehouse logic running inside the commerce platform.
  • You have a strong in-house Magento team and the platform is not actually the constraint.
  • Your B2B model needs deeply custom quoting and approval flows beyond what Shopify B2B supports.

Frequently asked questions

  • Usually, but not by pretending Magento's data model exists on Shopify. Attribute sets become metafield definitions, configurable products become variants, and anything that relied on dependent custom options or bundle logic needs an app, Shopify Functions, or a change to how the product is sold. The honest answer comes from the audit, not from a sales call. If a meaningful part of your catalogue cannot be expressed without ugly compromises, we will show you which products and let you decide.
