What each approach is
A Liquid theme renders your storefront on Shopify, using Shopify's templating language and the theme editor. A headless storefront separates the front end from Shopify: you build it with a framework such as Hydrogen, Shopify's React-based framework for custom storefronts, and fetch data through the Storefront API.
Why teams go headless
- Highly custom experiences that themes cannot deliver.
- One content and commerce back end feeding several front ends.
- Advanced performance and personalisation work by an experienced engineering team.
- Complex content models that go beyond what the theme editor handles.
The trade-offs
- Cost and time: more to design, build, host and maintain.
- Ecosystem: many apps that work by injecting into themes need extra work or replacements in a headless build.
- Editing: marketers lose some of the ready-made theme editor convenience unless you build equivalents.
- SEO: a headless site can rank well, but you take responsibility for rendering, metadata, structured data, redirects and sitemaps that a theme gives you by default.
- Speed: headless is not automatically faster. A lean theme can beat a poorly built headless store.
How to decide
- List the experiences you need that a theme genuinely cannot deliver.
- Check whether a custom Liquid theme with tailored sections could meet them.
- Count the engineering capacity you have for ongoing maintenance.
- Go headless only if the benefits are specific and worth the added cost.
If you are exploring it, our headless and Hydrogen team can assess fit. Otherwise, performance-first themes are where most stores should look first.
Frequently asked questions
- Is headless Shopify better than a Liquid theme?
- Not by default. It offers more freedom but adds cost, complexity and responsibility. For most stores a well-built Liquid theme is the better choice.
- Is headless Shopify good for SEO?
- It can be, but you have to implement rendering, metadata, structured data, redirects and sitemaps yourself, which themes provide by default.
- What is Hydrogen?
- Hydrogen is Shopify's React-based framework for building custom headless storefronts that connect to Shopify through its APIs.
