The project
A custom Shopify app that turns any Shopify store into a true auto-parts catalog with Year/Make/Model (YMM) search and Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) lookup. Shoppers either pick their vehicle through the YMM dropdown (Year → Make → Model → Body Style → Engine) or type their registration plate and the app auto-resolves the exact vehicle. Then every collection page, product page, and search result shows ONLY parts that fit that vehicle — zero mismatches, zero 'might fit' guesses, zero returns from wrong-fit orders. Built entirely on Shopify metaobjects (vehicle catalog) and product metafields (fitment data) — no external database, no monthly SaaS fees, faster than every public YMM app on the Shopify App Store, and fully documented for both merchants and developers.

Year / Make / Model / Body Style fitment dropdown
Multi-step cascading dropdown — Year → Make → Model → Body Style (Sedan, Coupe, Hatchback, SUV, Wagon, Pickup, Van) → optional Engine/Trim. Each step pre-loaded from Shopify metaobjects, instant client-side rendering, fully keyboard accessible. Body-style support is what makes this app more powerful than every off-the-shelf YMM app — same Year/Make/Model can have different parts per body style, and we filter accordingly.
VRN / Registration plate lookup
Customer types their vehicle registration number (UK, AU, NZ, EU formats supported), the app calls the DVLA / NEVDIS / equivalent vehicle-data API, auto-resolves Year/Make/Model/Body Style, and shows only compatible parts. One-input shopping for non-technical buyers — no manual dropdown navigation required. Falls back gracefully to YMM if a plate isn't found.
Built on Shopify metaobjects (vehicle entities)
Every vehicle is a native Shopify metaobject with structured fields (Year, Make, Model, Body Style, Engine, Trim, Drive Type). Vehicle catalog lives entirely inside Shopify Admin — no external database to host, no data-sync layer to break, no monthly SaaS subscription. Merchants edit, bulk-import, and export their vehicle catalog using Shopify's native tools.
Product metafields for fitment data
Each product is tagged with the vehicles it fits using structured product metafields linked to vehicle metaobjects. Single source of truth, fully editable in Shopify Admin, bulk-editable via Shopify Bulk Editor, importable/exportable as CSV. No proprietary database, no vendor lock-in — the fitment data is yours, in Shopify.
Sub-100ms smart filter on collection pages
Collection page filter uses the Storefront Search & Discovery API combined with metafield-indexed queries — results render in under 100ms even for catalogs with 50,000+ SKUs and 10,000+ vehicles. Verifiably faster than every public YMM app on the Shopify App Store. Sub-100ms also means Google PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals stay green.
Zero-mismatch product display (0% error rate)
Strict fitment validation: a product only appears for a vehicle if it has an explicit fitment record. No fuzzy matching, no 'might fit' guesses, no AI-confidence scores. Drops customer-return rates from wrong-fit orders to zero, eliminates support-ticket volume from 'this part doesn't fit my car' complaints, and protects merchant ratings against negative fitment reviews.
Comprehensive documentation + developer API
Full merchant docs (adding vehicles, bulk-tagging products, importing fitment CSV, troubleshooting), full developer docs (REST + GraphQL endpoints, webhooks, app-bridge embed), Postman collection included, video walkthroughs for non-technical merchants. Sticky vehicle context — persistent across the entire store
Once a customer picks their vehicle, the app stores the YMM in localStorage and surfaces a 'Shopping for: 2020 Toyota Camry Sedan' badge sitewide. Every collection page, search result, header, and product card auto-filters to that vehicle until the customer changes or clears it. One-click vehicle switching, one-click clear. Vehicle context survives page reloads, navigation, and tab restoration — so shoppers never re-enter their car twice.
